Satisfied with immortality?
[edit]The paragraph re. happiness with immortality should probably be deleted. Element Girl and the character from the first Death trilogy both desperately wanted to die and were unable to do so, and there have probably been other characters in similar situations in Sandman or other works. --24.161.108.255 05:42, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
- I agree, up to a point - Element Girl hated her awful life and wanted to die, and probably would have done had she been capable of committing suicide - but her misery was less to do with her immortality itself and more to do with her isolation from normal society. But I agree that immortality is not depicted as a blessing - just more life. Rewrite hopefully addresses this. 86.139.3.176 20:46, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Tone
[edit]I added a notice about the inappropriate tone because the section on Gadling's philosophy did not seem to be written in an encyclopedic manner. It seemed a bit too informal. 74.136.209.77 (talk) 22:42, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Agreed. "... this may be what happens when he dies." is pure speculation. This article needs to be cleaned up. 65.175.154.145 (talk) 19:53, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed again, kind of. There are a lot of things here, especially towards the end of the article (the mentioned "may be what happens..." is a good example), that don't really "fit" Wikipedia and that someone who is more sure than I that "makes the encyclopedia better" should probably remove. Still, it's interesting and makes more or less sense... Ever wonder (talk) 19:50, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Why does this article have a philosophy section?
[edit]The breakdown conforms with neither the style guide for fictional characters nor the style guide for comics. Shall I rework it? Cfsibley (talk) 01:27, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think it is necessary. The style guide shouldn't be a straightjacket. The philosophy section does seem to need trimming for original research though. Mezigue (talk) 10:54, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
1389 Plague example misquoted?
[edit]I can't find "No, of course the plague isn't God's punishment" in 'Men of Good Fortune', from The Doll's House (The Sandman vol. 2). Checked the whole 1389 segment, and while the plague was mentioned, it was never in those exact words. Is this a wrong quote taken from some other source, or are there different versions in print? Limyj88 (talk) 03:31, 24 November 2012 (UTC) note: i've decided to retire the previous username and will reply under Silvermael (talk)
- You're quite right: ""No, of course the plague isn't God's punishment" isn't in Men of Good Fortune at all[1] . To to the best of my knowledge the only differences between versions occur in page number, coloring, the covers (though the McKean cover art is reprinted in ever version I've seen, it's not always displayed on the cover of the edition itself), and the absence/presence of ads. What probably happened is that the person writing mistook "...Of course AIDS God's way of punishing people, Darren. Don't be a pillock..." (though notice, in the article, this is misquoted as "Don't be a pillock, Darren, of course AIDS isn't a punishment from God") for the misquote you caught in an effort to reproduce the diachronic parallels in the tavern conversation (page 24, panel 1). - So can I just make the edit? I'm new to contributing and don't know the wiki conventions and such. Silvermael (talk) 03:42, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Go for it. I've been overhauling the article but left that section untouched (though now under Appearances). I'm not sure all the info on the transition we're discussing needs to be in that paragraph, but correct as you see fit, and cite. Cfsibley (talk) 04:34, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- It does seem out of place and unnecessary under Appearances. I simply cleaned up inaccurate information, but maybe it should be removed entirely or moved under a new heading? Silvermael (talk) 20:58, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Beautiful. I think you're right; the paragraph is markedly out of place. I think I'll remove at least the part about the echoing and Daniel; as true as it may be, it's pretty classic OR. Cfsibley (talk) 22:27, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

@Silvermael: Just wanted to note that the plague example is not from their first meeting but their fifth, when Hob is in disgrace. "Do not be so free in assigning plagues, fires or floods to the judgement of the Lord for our sins." The same for the "make more on the dole" comment.--Auric talk 14:18, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
