Shortest sentences
[edit]- The shortest sentences in the English language are: "I am" and "I do"
Wrong. "I." can be a perfectly valid sentence. Fredrik 16:01, 9 May 2004 (UTC)
- "I." is a sentence fragment because it has no verb. Tribunar 16:08, 9 May 2004 (UTC)
- Okay, that's right. But "Go" is a valid sentence, whereas "I am" is not [1]. So the article should say that the shortest sentence is "Go", not "I am" or "I do". Fredrik 16:13, 9 May 2004 (UTC)
- "I" is a valid and complete sentence if uttered in response to a question such as "Who's in charge here?", although many native speakers would say "I am" or "Me" instead. The verb is understood. Andrewa 21:21, 9 May 2004 (UTC)
- A complete sentence needs to be wholly understood as a single unit. If it requires context from another sentence to be understood, than it is not complete. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.50.119.175 (talk)
- "I" cannot be a valid sentence because it does not have a verb. A verb is needed to make a complete sentence. "I" is just a subject, so it isn't a complete sentence, while "Go" could have an understood you, and so the sentence is technically "(You) go." [edit]User:2409:4062:2e8f:c9b1::1e4b:ab10 is repeatedly vandalizing this page by trying to turn it into a regular article. Two problems with this:
- You seem to have no knowledge of Wikipedia markup language - which is a serious matter. You're putting bizarre heading into the article when you should be using things like "== This is a heading ==".
- You don't understand that this page is **NOT** an article about the linguistic concept of a "sentence" - it is a "disambiguation" page - which is the way that Wikipedia directs people to the various different meanings of the word "Sentence" (for example - a prison sentence). By trying to turn this into an article about linguistics, you are quite literally vandalizing Wikipedia.
Please don't do that.
