[edit]- 1859 – The Atchison and Topeka Railroad Company, forerunner of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, is chartered to build a railroad from Topeka, Kansas, to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
20th century
[edit]- 1951 – The San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway discontinues passenger train service.
- 1994 – Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) begins operating over former MidSouth Rail Corporation tracks (previously spun off from Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in 1986) following the recent merger of MidSouth into KCS.[1]
- 1999 – Amtrak begins operations of Talgo trainsets between Seattle, Portland and Eugene, Oregon.

- 1938 – Alastair Morton, chief executive of Eurotunnel 1987-1996, chairman of Strategic Rail Authority 1999-2001, is born (d. 2004).
