Origin of word Mogul?
[edit]Anybody knowing the origin of the word "mogul"? My dictionary only knows "mogul piste, mogul slope" but no explation what "mogul" alone means.
In German or more correct in Austrian dialect "Mugel" means "hump", "hunch" or "tiny hill". While the official (high German) translation of "mogul piste" would be "Buckelpiste", "Mugelpiste" is commonly used (at least in Austrian dialect). Anybody knowing if that is the real origin of the word? -- Wirthi 19:17, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
- This says it probably from Norwegian dialect muga (heap, mound) or Sthn Germany dialect mugel as above. AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 03:19, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
I Guess Mogul comes from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mughal_Empire MUGHUL ]Emperors who ruled India for 3 centuries from 16th to 18th century AD. TajMahal was built by one of the moghul emperors ( Shahjahan ) . Since they were the richest and most powerful kings of their time, mogul has become synonymous anything related with pompous and richness
I got the following from Wikipedia reference to Mughal empire
The alternate spelling of the empire, Mogul, is the source of the modern word mogul. In popular news jargon, this word (Mughal / Mogul) denotes a successful business magnate who has built for himself a vast (and often monopolistic) empire in one or more specific industries. The usage seems to have an obvious reference to the expansive and wealthy empires built by the Mughal kings in India. Rupert Murdoch, for example, is a news mogul. See also Media mogul.
Struck out as having nothing to do with the topic of the article. -- SGBailey 20:16, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Content removal
[edit]This page was redirected to the Mogul Skiing page. The problem is the core of what this page is about was not actualy incorperated into the article. So in effect anyone trying to find out just what Moguls are and how they are formed will not find any information. Either this page stays up, or someone rewords the other article to include this content. Its incredibly stupid to redirect to another page and then fail to add the content of the directed page. Its equivilant to deletion of information. Alyeska 06:29, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed. I warned the user who who created the duplicate article, erasing the edit history and creating double redirects along the way, but he went on to do the same thing with rock climbing anyway. I have now imported the description of a mogul to mogul skiing and will turn this back to a redirect. Prolog 09:49, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
