User:Maurreen/Core topics
By popular demand, more or less ... This is begun December 4, 2004, to be a list of maybe about 100 core subjects, that for example would go in a "release" version of Wikipedia. It is small to be tightly focused.
Articles on individual countries are core topics, but beyond the scope of this list because there are so many and their value is clear.
At least as a rule of thumb, biographies are beyond the scope of this list, because there are multitudes and their value when considered individually is too subjective.
Other contenders for core articles include articles on the English language, timelines, maps and any reference material This is a work in progress. And the list started out closer to 150 than 100, but I hope it will at least not go past 200.

Changes from original list
[edit]Most of this section copied from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Core_topics on Jan. 23, 2006.
- Airplane or Flight replaced by the more general & complete article Aircraft. -- OK
- Analysis just a very broad dab page, so removed. -- OK
- Arts is just a list of links to different arts articles. Deleted. -- OK
- Industries is just a redirect to industry, so only the latter remains in the list. -- OK
- Drama replaced by theatre as recommended by theatre expert (see discussion page). -- OK
- Movement is a dab page, so Social movement picked instead. -- OK
- Rail is a dab page, so Rail transport (main article on the topic) used instead. -- OK
- Space is a dab page, so Outer space used instead. -- OK
- Telecommunications redirects to Telecommunication, so the latter has been used. -- OK
- Food and drink redirects to cuisine, so this has been listed. However there is a long article on food and a short one on drink, also. Should these be considered? ???
