Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:

If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language

POV on Wikipedia

As you can see, a few people have reverted your addition to Wikipedia. This indicates that you should rethink whether it is a neutral statement, and whether your personal opinion is an appropriate thing to add to the first paragraph of the article. Please take a look at the Wikipedia:Neutral point of view policy. In addition, continuing to revert the article would be a violation of the Wikipedia:Three revert rule and you could be temporarily blocked from editing. Hope this explains things. What you are now doing could be construed as disruption, also against the rules. Please don't add self-references to articles such as "see the history". I suggest you head to Talk:Wikipedia and propose your changes in a constructive manner. Rhobite 03:53, Mar 20, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply, Tony. You can respond here, it's better to keep discussions on a single talk page. Since the quote is from Jimbo Wales in a Slashdot interview, it's clear to me that it's rhetoric, but acceptable rhetoric. The quote isn't part of an official mission statement, although it appears to have gained "semi-official" status. My point is that it is not meant to be taken completely literally. It's meant to inspire, not to direct - it's a chicken in every pot. I don't think the quote needs a disclaimer. Rhobite 04:07, Mar 20, 2005 (UTC)

I've just discovered this (WTD, remember to sign your comments!). I'd already reaised the question on Talk:Wikipedia; as I'm still a bit unsure why WTD's additions were reverted, would it be possible to explain there (for my benefit as much as for his)?
